Q: What’s the best time of year to divide peonies?

— L.A., Warren

A: The best time to divide peonies is early fall, but it can also be done in spring as soon as the soil is workable, according to a fact sheet from the Ohio State University Extension. The same holds true for planting and transplanting them, the fact sheet says.

You can find the fact sheet at the extension’s Ohioline website, http://ohioline.osu.edu. Click on ”Yard & Garden” and then ”Flowers,” and go down the list of choices to find the publication titled Growing Peonies.
