Keeping the bathroom clean is easier with these suggestions from the American Cleaning Institute, a trade organization for the cleaning products industry:
• Use the bathroom fan. It helps remove moisture, which causes mold and mildew. Vacuum the vents regularly so dust doesn’t block them.
• Train family members to wipe down the sink and its surroundings every time they use it. The institute recommends keeping cleaning wipes next to the sink, or keep a sponge handy if you’re concerned about creating waste.
• Keep a squeegee in the shower. Use it to wipe down the walls and glass doors before you
step out.
• Use the right soap. Bar soap is fine if users return it to its soap dish. Liquid soap in a pump dispenser may be neater, as long as the users’ aim is accurate.
• Keep a bleach pen on hand. Use it for spot removal of mold and mildew.
• Get a hand-held vacuum to quickly pick up hair, powder and other messes.
• Rinse the tub after each use to keep soap film and hard-water deposits from forming.
• Use a daily shower cleaner. Mist surfaces right after showering, while the walls are wet and warm.
• Sort out reading material. When old magazines and newspapers accumulate, they become a magnet for dust and mold.
• Keep a set of cleaning supplies in each bathroom for convenience. If your household has small children or young visitors, store the supplies in a cabinet with a child-resistant lock.
